insomnia therapy poised to break into global sleep aid market
A technology-driven sleep therapy solution has taken a major step towards capturing a share of the global $80bn/£57bn sleep aid market after securing US regulatory registration.
SleepCogni, a data-supported device which uses haptic feedback to break cognitive cycles, has now been registered for medical use by the US Food & Drug Administration (FDA).
Co-founded by Sheffield-based entrepreneur Richard Mills, who has personally suffered from sleeping disorders, and Dutch chronobiologist and sleep expert, Dr Maan van de Werken, SleepCogni is a hand-held sleeping aid which enables users to self-manage their insomnia.
It provides users with an immediate sleep aid whilst simultaneously collecting data from 15 sensors to provide informed insight for clinical intervention, including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for insomnia.
The device has secured 11 patents including ones for its wind down technology and Active-Biofeedback.
Following a successful clinical trial at Sheffield Hallam University, preliminary analysis has shown that SleepCogni reduces insomnia – as measured by Insomnia Severity Index – in seven days.
FDA registration opens up immediate access to an estimated 70m sleep sufferers living in the US.
Since it was founded in 2015, SleepCogni has raised almost £1.8m to support technology development, including investment from venture capitalists Mercia and other private sources, and has secured three research and development grants through the UK’s innovation agency, Innovate UK.
The company is now about to begin beta testing its device at four sites, two in the UK and two in the US, one of which is a world-leading healthcare system.
Upon successful testing, SleepCogni is set to be rolled out to 130 clinics of one of the largest sleep care management groups in the US.

Insomnia buster-OmniPEMF electromagnetic headband for sleep, pain relief
OmniPEMF, a creator of wellness devices, has released its neurostimulation headband, called NeoRhythm, for worldwide availability today.
The headband uses pulsed electromagnetic field (PEMF) technology to help wearers create the desired mental state for sleep, relaxation, focus, pain relief, meditation or energy.
The PEMF technology in the headband triggers the brain to mimic the signals created by NeoRhythm, creating “brainwave entrainment,” which is the brain’s ability to match external frequencies.
OmniPEMF compared this process to the feeling of getting sleepy on a train ride. The brain can match the rhythm of the wheels to create a feeling of relaxation and sleepiness.
NeoRhythm can be worn in five different positions on the head to better reach the part of the brain being targeted.
It also includes six stimulation programs that utilize different frequencies in order to achieve the desired mental state. They include one for sleep, which helps slow down the brain; a deep relaxation program that helps users reach a state of calmness; a program for focus that leads to a higher state of perception; a pain-control system that reduces sensitivity to discomfort; a meditation program; and an energizing program for the mind and body.
NeoRhythm connects to an app that houses the six programs and tells users how long they last, the frequency used and how the user should position the headband.
